As Women’s Month draws to a close, the achievements of women who are creating businesses and opportunities continue to take centre stage.
One such entrepreneur is Kenilewe Mntambo, Director and Shareholder of Nhlangothi Farming, a growing agricultural business based in Mooinooi, North West.
Nhlangothi Farming was registered in September 2021 after market research and a feasibility study identified opportunities in vegetable production. The farm produces a variety of crops, including cabbage, carrots, beans, pumpkin, spinach, onions and tomatoes.The business has since expanded beyond farming to provide value-added services. Its operations include harvesting, washing, chopping, dicing, slicing and packaging vegetables according to customers’ specifications.Nhlangothi Farming supplies produce to various markets, including Pick n Pay, Food Zone supermarkets, restaurants, street vendors, caterers and individual customers.
The company also supplies Milanesa Food, which caters to Anglo American.Mntambo’s agricultural journey also extends to skills development. The company has agreements with higher-learning institutions that allow students to gain practical experience on the farm. Interns are exposed to agricultural technology, soil and water sampling, laboratory analysis and other aspects of farming.
The company conducts regular soil and water analyses and says it follows guidance from the Agricultural Research Council and Department of Agriculture.Looking ahead, Nhlangothi Farming aims to expand into food processing and packaging, with plans to distribute its products across the province and country.
As Women’s Month is celebrated, Mntambo’s story highlights how women are not only participating in agriculture but building enterprises, creating opportunities and contributing to economic growth—one harvest at a time.
