A devastating incident has shaken the community of Rustenburg after a young lady studying education at Northwest University was killed by her boyfriend last Saturday, 3 August. The incident occurred in August, amidst celebrations of Women’s Month, leaving the family and friends in shock and grief.

Onalenna was allegedly stepped on the neck, causing her death. The family is still grappling with the loss, and the grandmother of the late student has issued a heartfelt warning to young women. She advised them to avoid abusive relationships, emphasizing the tragic consequences that can occur if they fail to do so.

Speaking to the family, her grandmother’s words were laced with emotion as she reflected on the loss of her beloved granddaughter. Her message served as a stark reminder of the dangers of staying in abusive relationships.

Florence Mbuqa, the grandmother of the late Onalenna fondly remembers her granddaughter as a brilliant, respectful, and smart child. Onalenna was thriving in university, pursuing a degree in education, and was set to graduate the following year. Her academic achievements were impressive, having recently secured five distinctions. The family had high hopes for her future, but their joy was cut short by her tragic death.

According to her grandmother, the last time they saw Onalenna was on that fateful Saturday when she asked to go out, and her family agreed. Little did they know, it would be the last time they would see her alive. Florence’s heartfelt words capture the pain and sadness the family feels, having lost a promising young life full of potential.

The alleged perpetrator has been arrested as he handed himself over to the police. He is expected to appear in court on August 18, 2024, to face justice for his actions.

After a lengthy forensic examination, Her family and friends will bid her final farewell on August 16, when she will be buried.
