Matric Class of 2025: North West Province Shines with 88.49%

THE North West Province has celebrated a remarkable achievement in the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, with an impressive pass rate of 88.49%. This represents a 0.9% increase from the previous year’s 87.52%.

Among South Africa’s top matric achievers was Temogo Matong from Setswakgosing Secondary School in Morokweng Village outside Vryburg from was named the top candidate, scoring an impressive 1727 marks in his best six subjects.

Matong from Morokweng said becoming one of the country’s top learners has always been his dream.
“I’m very happy and proud to be here. I was worried because I couldn’t secure bursaries to send me to school, but I’m ecstatic to see myself here,” Matong said.

Matong plans to study medicine at the University of Cape Town. He credits his success to disciplined planning, saying he used a strict study timetable to manage his time effectively during exam preparations.

The province’s four districts all showed improvement, with Bojanala leading the way with a pass rate of 90.82%. Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati districts also performed well, with pass rates of 87.84% and 87.17%, respectively. Ngaka Modiri Molema district rounded out the list with a pass rate of 85.61%.

Potchefstroom Gimnasium topped the list of high-performing schools, achieving a 100% pass rate and boasting 276 distinctions. Other standout schools include Wesvalia High School for Girls and Rustenburg High, which secured second and third positions.

Despite the overall success, 37 schools recorded pass rates below 70%. The department has vowed to support these schools to improve their performance.

Motsumi further extended condolences to families of learners who passed away, including Onalenna Booi and Donald Boitumelo Maje by handing over their results to the families.

She expressed gratitude to stakeholders, including the African National Congress, business and mining houses, and school governing bodies, for their support.
