The 2026 Councillor’s Cup tournament, held at Boitekong Stadium on Youth Day, delivered more than just football action, providing opportunities for youth development, community engagement and support for local businesses.

The Family Football Club emerged victorious after a hard-fought final against Barcelona FC, securing the tournament title along with R10,000 in prize money, new soccer kits and match balls.

Speaking after the victory, The family FC founder Winnie Seanego described the win as a significant milestone for the club and its players.

“This is more than a trophy for us. We are grateful to Councillor Thabang Rampou and the organisers for creating a platform where young players can showcase their talent and pursue their dreams of playing professional football,” said Seanego.

The tournament also served as a platform to promote youth empowerment and address social issues affecting the community.

“Events like the Councillor’s Cup are important not only for the players but also for small businesses in the community,” said Isabella Thebe, who was selling food at the tournament. “The large turnout gave us an opportunity to make sales and support our families. We appreciate initiatives that bring people together because they also create economic opportunities for local vendors like us.”

Human rights, gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide activist Koketso Berries commended the initiative while calling for greater efforts to ensure community safety.

“We applaud Councillor Thabang Rampou for creating spaces that empower our youth through sport and dialogue,” said Berries. “However, we must continue to speak out firmly against the killings taking place in our communities. Youth empowerment means little if our young people are not safe.”

Ward 21 Councillor Thabang Rampou, who organised the tournament, said the event was designed to provide young people with opportunities to develop their talents and remain positively engaged.

“The Councillor’s Cup is more than a game. It is a platform where our youth can showcase talent, stay off the streets and dream beyond Boitekong. When we invest in sport, we invest in discipline, unity and the future of our youth,” said Rampou.

“We hosted this tournament to give our young people hope and opportunity. Boitekong’s talent deserves a stage, and the Councillor’s Cup is that stage.”
