Sebonta Desbo Mohono, a remarkable leader from the North West Province of South Africa, has lived a life marked by dedication to education, community development, and public service. Born in Chaneng Village near Rustenburg, Desbo Mohono’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming the Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature is a testament to her hard work and commitment.
Mohono’s career began in education, where she taught at Rakoko High School and later at Rauwane Sepeng in Tlhabane. Her passion for making a difference led her to politics, becoming a Member of the Provincial Legislature in 2009. She was appointed to the Executive Council and served as MEC for various departments, including Agriculture and Rural Development, Tourism, and Human Settlement.
As MEC for Human Settlement, she created opportunities for project owners in agriculture, enabling farming communities to thrive. She established a vegetable market in Taung and Mahikeng, empowering farmers to sell their produce. Her initiatives with the Industrial Development Corporation helped rural communal farmers acquire Nguni cattle, boosting local agriculture.
Mohono’s achievements resonate across South Africa, particularly in the North West Province. Her collaboration with Royal Bafokeng Platinum Mines contributed R1 million towards irrigation in Taung, showcasing her commitment to community development through partnerships.She holds a Diploma in Education from Lehurutshe College of Education, a Further Diploma in Education from Vista University, a B Ed Honours in Education from Tshwane University of Technology, and various certificates and degrees in governance and public leadership from Wits University and North West University, culminating in a PhD in Agricultural Economics.She has held various leadership positions in organizations such as SADTU, COSATU, ANC Women’s League, and ANC North West structures.
