Today marks a significant milestone in the life of 107-year-old Granny Francinah Matlhoko from Mabeskraal Village. After years of waiting and struggling, living in a precarious shack, Granny Matlhoko’s new home was officially handed over to her.

The Department of Human Settlements and the Moses Kotane Local Municipality partnered to make this dream a reality.The handing over ceremony on Wednesday 30 July is a testament to the power of government initiatives and community efforts coming together to make a difference in people’s lives.

Granny Matlhoko’s family is overjoyed, and her granddaughter, Semakaleng Kgosimang, expressed gratitude to the authorities for taking steps to address their grandmother’s housing needs.This gesture brings an end to Granny Matlhoko’s long wait, providing her with a safe and comfortable place to live. The new home is a symbol of dignity and comfort, and it’s a reminder that everyone deserves a place to call home.

MEC Gaoage Oageng Molapisi handed over the house as part of the Nelson Mandela Month celebrations. This life-changing event was made possible through a partnership between the Department of Human Settlements and a developer, after North West Unlocked published her story, highlighting her struggles living in a shack.

Dinah Kgosimang, Granny’s daughter, expressed her profound gratitude to the department, stating that they had lost hope, but now they have a decent house to live in. “The department’s intervention has significantly improved our living conditions. The new house is not only beautiful but also spacious, and I am truly humbled and speechless. The impact of this gesture on our lives cannot be overstated, and we are forever grateful.”
