Impala Spokesman Johan Theron said Impala Bafokeng Resources (IBR) is aware of flooding concerns raised by residents in Mafenya. We understand the challenges this has caused and empathise with those affected.

This issue has been a longstanding one, influenced by the natural topography of the areas and the pre-dating of Mafenya Road rehabilitation project. Recent abnormal rainfall has further aggravated the situation. The road upgrades, which were planned in consultation either relevant authorities, did not increase storm water runoff but aimed to improve infrastructure for local community and road users.

Johan said IBR is committed to working with the community and relevant stakeholders to assist where possible. We have engaged a specialist service provider to assess the situation and provide guidance on a long-term solution. As an interim measure, we have also enlisted a local service provider from the community to assist with pumping water from affected areas “We will continue engaging with stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions.”
