TEN learners from disadvantaged backgrounds in the Bojanala Platinum District have been awarded fully funded bursaries by the municipality.
MaxProf company also partnered with the municipality and funded two more learners with bursaries.
The learners received laptops, tablets among other gifts. Representatives from Old Mutual were also present to create partnership with the municipality to offer financial assistance for the following year.
When addressing the learners, parents, schools, Dikgosi and government officials who were in attendance at the bursary award ceremony held at Royal Marang Hotel in Phokeng on Friday, 06 March, Executive Mayor Susan Nthangeni emphasised that the aim of this bursary programme is to assist performing learners and learners with potential to succeed in Higher Education Institutions who do not have the financial means to study towards a qualification.
Nthangeni said the municipality will amend its internal policies to ensure that bursary recipients can gain valuable work experience through internships at the municipality after completing their studies.
She said a total of 1.5 million was spent to cover the bursaries and gadgets.
She encouraged the learners to start working from day one and be disciplined throughout the whole year. “Use the education you will receive to help realise your dreams. “And come back to serve your communities,” she said“We wish all our students the very best as they embark on this new chapter. “Our municipality will ensure their journey is a smooth and enriching one, and we look forward to seeing them achieve great results and make meaningful contributions to their communities.”
Among the top achievers is Reneilwe Morake (18) from Sandfontein, Moruleng, who achieved five distinctions and is now pursuing a BCom in Accounting at the University of Johannesburg. Reneilwe received a tablet to help support her studies.
Among the beneficiaries was Charmaine Ndaba from Koster who will be pursuing Education degree at the University of South Africa. “My parents could not afford to send me to university. I am grateful to the Municipality for helping me realise my dream of becoming a Teacher. I hope the new cohort of bursary recipients will do their best as they begin their new journey,” said Charmaine.
