Ntatemogolo Meshack Legae celebrates 104 birthday in Phokeng outside Rustenburg.Pic Rapula Mancai

RRE Meshack Legae was joined by family, friends and local residents to celebrate his birthday at a party that was held at his home in Phokeng on Wednesday, 21 May.

Dignitaries from all Rustenburg local municipality were present to honour a man who had devoted his life to the democracy of the country and played such an important role in it. His abundant love for her children, family and neighbours is what has helped Ntatemogolo Legae reach the age of 104.

In a time when reaching this milestone is considered near impossible, for him it was made possible by the love he shows others, keeping healthy and most importantly respect and fearing God.

He is stronger and healthier than most men below his age.

He is still does outside to cut trees around his yard and doesn’t use a walking stick.

The energetic and clean grandpa was a soldier who travelled around the world. He is a father of seven children, and has grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

His granddaughter Matsheu Legae said his grandpa is a firm believer in good hygiene taught them how to take care of themselves and their home. Matshaeu said whenever his grandpa starts to complain about pain or not feeling well, she is always there to take care of him.

“He is still strong and hope to celebrate many more birthdays.” She thanked everyone who had helped to organise the party for him, and God for blessing him with a long life.”A family needs senior citizens to provide wisdom,” she said.

Neighbour, Strike Mejelo (76) said it was important for grandpa to be celebrated while still alive. Mejelo called upon all relevant authorities to preserve the legacy of Rre Legae. “It would be great to have a street or a building named after him to order his contribution. He emphasized that many soldiers who travelled abroad did not make it and that it was a blessing to still grandpa reaching such a milestone.

The Executive Mayor Shiela Mabale-Huma who attended the celebration acknowledged the role and significance of the elderly in all our communities. Mabale-Huma mentions the importance of honouring and respecting the good work that they have done.

She urged youth people to follow the foot steps of the elderly, be responsible and avoid reckless behaviour such as substance abuse and violence, emphasising the importance of discipline, hard work.
